Smart Eye Automotive Interior Sensing

Smart Eye Technology Update Oct 26th, 2022

  • Head, eye, and gaze tracking.
  • Facial expression analysis and Emotion AI
  • Distraction Detection (e.g., drowsiness, attention).
  • Activity and body pose tracking
  • Object detection
  • Biosensor data fusion software.

For Automotive improving road safety to save lives around the world and redefining the mobility experience to enhance comfort, wellness, and entertainment. Road-ready embedded Driver Monitoring Systems and Interior Sensing for OEMs and Tier 1s.

Features:

  • Drowsiness – alerts when sleepiness, drowsiness, or yawning is detected.
  • Dangerous Behavior – detects distractions like eating, drinking, or phone calls.
  • Distraction – ensures focus stays on road with gaze tracking.
  • Face Recognition – Recognizes all kinds of faces, even with face mask and sunglasses

Benefits:

  • Same tracking algorithm as in all Smart Eye DMS products
  • Fully automotive, own-developed hardware
  • Vehicle integration is possible CAN, but not required No calibration is required, dynamic self-calibration implemented.
  • Setting and installation support via the Smart Eye app.
  • Monitor and control through Smart Eye cloud.

Working Principle:

  1. Image data captured by the camera.
  2. Smart Eye’s algorithms then identify e.g., eye and head position, driver features, iris, and pupil behavior.
  3. The data is processed in different applications, deciding whether the driver is sleepy, inattentive, etc.
  4. The data sent over on the CAN-bus (Controller Area Network) allows the application to interact with other subsystems.
  5. Default warnings are audio and visual but can be customized by the customer
  6. Actuators can receive commands to e.g., take over steering or send out a warning to the driver to stop.

Eye Tracking Leader – Smart Eye in automotive eye tracking, delivering driver monitoring systems (DMS) since 2015. Automotive grade. Emotion AI pioneer Affectiva, in recent years, broadened its technology to automotive and in cabin sensing. Deep expertise in machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and data science with massive amounts of data – spun out of MIT in 2009.

Complementary technologies and capabilities create unparalleled, automotive-grade tech to improve road safety with differentiated mobility experiences that enhance safety, wellness, comfort, and entertainment.

  1. Interior Sensing software for large volume automakers.
  2. Eye-tracking system designed to bring automotive grade driver monitoring to existing vehicle fleets.
  3. Advanced eye tracking system for research applications.
  4. Content creators optimize media investment by measuring consumer emotional responses to videos, ads, movies and TV shows – unobtrusively and at scale.

AIS combines high intelligence with great flexibility. The system is scalable and developed with several different output options for alarming the driver. It can easily be upgraded and integrated with other systems. The AIS can also be connected to a vehicle CAN bus for HMI integration.

The system consists of an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and a camera unit, mounted slightly below the line of sight in order to view the face of the driver.

Platform-independent software As processors developed for smartphones subsequently become qualified for the automotive industry, new, improved chips continuously become available for series production. Smart Eye’s technology is thereby compatible with most relevant Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and Systems on Chips (SOCs). Moreover, Smart Eye’s platform-independent software can be locked-in late in the development process. These strategic considerations have proven to be entirely in line with the automotive industry’s preferences. They also mean that Smart Eye’s technology can be generic, leading to few customer adaptations and highly efficient integration processes.
