HEATED STEERING WHEEL DESIGN

A warm and comfortable steering wheel is essential for driving safety – integrated flexible, ultra-thin components and thermal systems into the steering wheel to supply a uniform and moderate temperature thermal comfort experience on leather and wooden surfaces. Solution # 1:

Use resistance wire to generate heat. A layer of resistance wire is placed in the leather wrapped by the steering wheel, and the power cord supplies power to the resistance wire through the part under the steering wheel that is connected to the shaft. The focus of the steering wheel heating is the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock directions of the steering wheel, that is, the heating of the hand-held area. Solution # 2:

Solution # 3:

Carbon nanotube heating film is a one-dimensional quantum material with a radial size of nanometers and an axial size of micrometers. Carbon nanotubes are mainly composed of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal shape to form coaxial circular tubes with several to tens of layers. Keep a fixed distance between layers, about 0.34nm, and the diameter is generally 2-20 nm. Carbon nanotubes can also be regarded as seamless and hollow nano-scale tubes formed by curling graphene sheets.

Solution # 4:

Looking back at the heat sink analogy we notice that one way to lower thermal resistance is to increase the size, specifically the area of the heat sink. Even if our wire has a sufficient wattage the small cross-sectional size can increase thermal resistance and reduce efficiency. If the wire shape was changed from round to thin and flat (more like a heat sink) then thermal resistance could be greatly reduced. This thin flat profile gives printed heating elements a great advantage over the small round wire shape. Another negative effect of the round wire is the non-conformal profile it has and thus heat path of a wire does not tell the whole story. Printed heater heaters lay flat and have a profile that is highly conformal. It may seem hard to understand why a printed heater using the same input  power could give better results than a wire heater, but when the model is considered in terms of thermal resistance the advantages become clear.

Seat Ventilation System

At present, there are two mainstream ways of fan ventilation in the market: Blowing and Suction.

Suction System: Airflow flows from side A to side B of the seat,  the ventilation system takes away the body heat to achieve the purpose of cooling.

Blowing System: Air flow flows from side B to side A of the seat, and the ventilation system directly blows the air volume to the human body to achieve the purpose of cooling down.

Below are the different layout types in the market:

  • Fan + Ventilation Bag: This form is the mainstream form of the current market. The blowing and suction are mostly arranged in this way. The airflow passes through the 3D mesh and through the non-woven vents to achieves the effect of blowing and suction function.
  • Fan + Layered Structure: Fan is built-in foam, air flow through the whole 3D mech, the ventilation area is enlarged, also due to the 3D mesh is widely open, so people feel less wind.
  • Fan Embedded in Airbag: This type belongs to fan embedded in air bag type, mostly used on seat foaming A side, the current market fan + air bag type basically on B-side structure, the applicability is not strong, the use of such structure is in the case of special requirements.
