Liftgate Linear Actuator Benchmarking

This is teardown analysis of one North American OE Rear Powered Lift Gate Assembly. Design HMI working with Dare-Auto (specialist in Brushless Motors and Controllers) are developing next generation assembly.

Current 2018 MY Key Components:

  • Lift gate linear actuator assembly.
  • Lead screw used for linear motion.
  • Planetary gearbox used to reduce speed & enlarge torque.
  • No O-ring/gasket or glue is used for sealing on both ends.

Basic design features for Autonomous Handsfree Liftgate System as designed by FZB Technologies are as follows:

  1. Normal and express dual speed.
  2. Obstacle detection.
  3. Gesture recognition.
  4. Self-Contained design for easy drop in integration.
  5. Network LIN compatible.
  6. FOB in range to activate gesture and command for open/close.
  7. Target reliability for 2x longer life over current designs.
  8. 40% lower power consumption suitable for electric vehicles.
  9. 8dB Quieter (~ 3 sones).
  10. Retrofits in the existing space with fewer wires.

Competitive Analysis Summary:

The benchmark brush motor size is almost exactly the same size as the WR motor 35X57mm. Based on examination of the brush motor wiring harness it has a ring magnet/Hall sensor position feedback.

The brush motor will have MOSFET driver to control speed rather than a 1 speed noisy relay. Design has 6 MOSFETS instead of 4 MOSFETS, no ring magnet or graphite brush/commutator ring, assume ring magnet Hall IC. The FZB proposal has the BLDC motor benefits as advantage over brush motor.

Also, depending on the distance of the Lift Gate controller to the brush motor, the FZB proposal has a wiring harness advantage as the power PWM wire lengths are shorter and it uses 1 wire LIN instead.
