Red Carpet Welcome Light from Rocker Panel

The design target here is for Red-carpet style projection from the rear passenger seat with brand-name projection from the rocker panel. Image must be high-quality projected image and high light intensity.

One option is still image projection of brand name Glass-Gobo projector for small size and high brightness. The concept is projected image on road surface with red carpet projector, video-beamer, brand name.

The target of the project is the development of a logo or welcome light projector with suitable optical characteristics and compact size so that is can be mounted on the underbody of a car, thus preventing any swiveling effects as with logo projectors for door or mirror positioning. Most important requirements are:

  1. Static projected image, with illuminance values above 300lx and good contrast over complete image size.
  2. Compact size, with mounting position and optical design such as to prevent staining and dust at rocker position.
  3. Easy optical and mechanical design for overall low-cost, with the possibility to change the logo or image content by simple means.
  4. Low power LED usage for minimal heat dissipation.

The projection of sharp images from the sill or the rocker of the car is a challenging optical design task, due to the restricted height of the projector position. Projection onto a strongly inclined image surface with ultra-short throw ratios and sufficient luminous flux typically requires complex optical systems, not being applicable for the cost targets of automotive welcome light projectors. To achieve a reasonable large projected image, with sharp content and high contrast over the complete lateral expansion of the image, and still using a simple and compact optical system, thus requires careful optimization of all optical design parameters, as source luminance, system etendue, depth of focus etc.
