Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensor (TPMS) as a key factor to:

  • Increase fuel efficiency379
  • Avoid unnecessary tire wear
  • Keep passengers’ safety
  • Mandatory in most countries

Current design intent in most automotive applications is chemical batteries which have the following drawbacks:

  1. High maintenance cost as just in the US, 40 million/year batteries are newly introduced due to harsh operation condition with cost of more than $320M/year.380
  2. Environmentally harmful.
  3. Hazardous/toxic components from “Lithium Thionyl Chloride chemistry”.
  4. Explosive at higher temperature

CONCLUSION / FUTURE WORKS:

1). Thin strap type EH device for TPMS

Magnet-shielding layers: reduction of current cancellation

3.05mW power generation (200 rpm or 25 km/h)

Thin and compact design

Durable design: no material deformation / contact / wear

2). Elimination of eddy current

Nonconductive/nonmagnetic material.

Plastic / composite

Rim shape change to hinder eddy current flow

Magnet size reduction

200~250W (power requirement) vs. 3.05mW (this study)

3). Prevention of contamination by steel particles

Design optimization of magnet shape to reduce contamination considering electromagnetism and fluidics
