The 2018 Light Fair showcased innovations that could help enhance feature content for lighting products. To bring true value to customer and integrator these must be complemented with other non-lighting innovations.

Below are few lighting innovations that can be applied to enhance features and functions in automotive ambient and feature lighting.

KHATOD Optical Solutions for Running Board and other interior or exterior ambient lighting applications. For more information write to technical@khatod.com.

  • Material = PMMA Clear – Non-yellowing, 10-year life.
  • Full angle C0-C180 at 50% from maximum: ~ 20°.
  • Tests carried out with 22 1/2 Watt LEDs, 5.6x3mm size, ~ 1100lm@Strip

RDOT Printed Electrochromic Displays are energy efficient, low cost and allow for flexible form factor. For more information contact sales@rdotdisplays.com.

LYTEUS Flexible OLED lighting offers great potential applications for ambient lighting in automotive interiors. Target is to design and produce OLED Lighting Strips of any shape, any size, any color, any design, high flexibility and small bending radius with long transparent strips. For more information CLICK www.lyteus.com.

NANOCOMP Directional Light Guide Film for lighting applications. For more information contact nano@nanocomp.fi.

SLD Laser enable high-beam headlights with range of 2,000 feet. SLD Laser’s LDs are also much smaller than LEDs. Key applications are Static spotlight headlamps, Dynamic illumination front lighting and Heads up displays. For more information contact info@sldlaser.com.

ENMECH flexible circuit boards to interconnect and light many LEDs that are distributed over a large area without the use of conventional cables. LED’s can be placed onto flexible circuit boards and allows you integrate the electronic controls which reduces the number of electrical interfaces and installation and logistics costs.

Below are few innovations identified by Design HMI at the 2018 Light Fair.

Over the last 18 months Design HMI has been working with innovators to enhance product design on few key automotive applications with the following target:

  1. Feature Enhancement.
  2. 25%+ cost reduction.
  3. Reliability improvement.

Lighting Innovations to Enhance Vehicle Features

Recently viewed some innovations in lighting technology that can be incorporated into automotive and other applications.

Super Slim Swivel LED and Mono Rail Lighting and Spot Light: While not designed for Automotive it is a ideal solution for Autonmous and other in vehicle applications to reduce aplication complexity. Monorail can be integrated into the roof panel and the reading lamp and ambient light can be snap fit anyway along the length.

Wireless Transmitters & Receivers: Wireless transmitters provide for non-stop operation and reduced maintenance cost. Once activated, these devices will reliably transmit data at fixed intervals with a pre-installed battery.

In Car Continuous Disinfection Lighting Technology: Patented system was on display that kills harmful bacteria linked to acquired infections (HAIs). Using a combination of 405nm Indigo and White LEDs it emits narrow spectrum light that kills bacteria while providing ambient illumination for the space.

Unlike UV light, it uses safe, visible light to automatically and continuously kill harmful bacteria in the air, and on hard and soft surfaces.

With autonomous vehicles coming into the public transportation domain and school busses lighting technology as demonstrated provides spatial orientation & visual clarity, while avoiding glare and the “strobe effect”.

Headlight w/Separate Fog Lamps: There are many headlight designs that use separate lamps for the fog / DRL / cornering light functions, below the main headlight.

Light Guide Technology for Modern LED Headlamps: It allows to design illuminated signatures and unique contours, important for a strong brand recognition of the car.

Advanced ray-tracing simulation methods and a good know-how of the manufacturing possibilities to design lightguide structures that are of small size, low cost and very high light-coupling efficiencies.

Also, laser remote phosphor technology is now also being used in automotive headlamps, enabling very long reach high beams or small-sized headlamp configurations.

White Light Color Temperature Adjust with Dimming: Dimming and Variable White controller without having to connect wires from the controller to the receiver. Offers Color Temperature and light Intensity Adjustment.

Touch-sensitive Intelligent Control Keypad: Have been very impressed and pushed their technology for NA Automotive applications with limited success. The controller is one of the best have even seen which is not only sleek, very shark characters but very thin – ideal for rear seat controls or integration into armrest.
