Below are just a few investigates from the LED Specifier Summit in Chicago and the SEEMA / AAPEX show in Vegas in the month of November 2015.

SEEMA / AAPEX Show: Innovations in HMI Devices and Interiors was limited. Most of the displays and updates were more in core vehicle functions like chassis, tires, transmission and aftermarket repair.

 

The LED Specifier Summit in Chicago on November 17th had some great technologies with potential application as imbedded device for automotive. Design HMI hopefully would like to take a couple of these in 2016 and develop application with both Automotive and aftermarket / consumer applications.

Soraa’s GaN on GaN™ LEDs provide more lumens per electrical watt and emit light in the violet range of wavelengths, 400nm to 440nm.

The Cooledge SQUARE and Cooledge LINE products are complete UL listed class 2 lighting systems. The products utilize a highly dense pattern of LEDs on a thin plastic substrate.

Cooledge products are flexible and provide consistent illumination from 120 lumens per watt and higher.

Specialty Lighting Industries is not really targeted for automotive applications. The closest is their step light application for RV and other aftermarket applications

Nichia LED had a display and they need no introduction. They manufacture highly reliable LEDs to support applications with high safety standards. *TS16949 Compliant

Philips Lighting Resources  had a display. Not sure if there were any special products or innovation that could enhance customer in car driving experience

Hilux provide lighting solutions using LumaFilm®, a thin and flexible, planar LED light emitter that does not require a heat sink. LumaFilm was invented and is brought to you by Minnesota based Hilux, LLC. Flexible, planar lighting can now wrap, bend or twist your light emitter to fit your needs versus being stuck to rigid, higher cost emitters and needs no heat sink.

In its standard format can be placed within 1” from most diffusers allowing applications not previously available for automotive interiors.

Standard Kelvin temperature ranges are available are 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K and 5000K. Other colors are possible upon request. Color Rendering Index (CRI) has a CRI of 85 but can be provided with 90+ CRI if needed.

Celite 1mm Thin LEC Light Panels are great but need A/C power. Application of an AC voltage generates a changing field within the phosphor, which causes the phosphor to emit light.  Flexible Light Panels are constructed using screen printable polymer thick film719

In automotive applications inverter would be needed which convert the DC current to the required voltage and frequency to power the panel

Ideal for large in car applications like roof panel lighting where the inverter can be packaged in a different location.

PARYLENE for MEMS Applications Parylene is the trade name for a variety of chemical vapor deposited poly (p-xylylene) polymers used as moisture and dielectric barriers. Applied through a deposition process, yielding completely conformal coatings with a pinhole free uniform thickness.

It is chemically and biologically inert and stable, and makes excellent barrier material. Also most organic coatings are readily penetrated by water molecules, with the exception of Parylene. Also has excellent electrical properties: low dielectric constant and loss with good high-frequency properties; good dielectric strength; and high bulk and surface resistance.

Widely considered as the ultimate conformal coating for the protection of devices, components and surfaces and major benefit of Parylene is its ultra-thin nature, resulting from a vapor deposition process. The coating ensures superior barrier properties, and with micron-level thickness that coats into even the smallest profiles and crevices of a MEMS device for complete protection
